A new history teacher arrives, Alaric Saltzman, to replace Mr. Tanner. Jeremy introduces his new teacher to Jenna. When Bonnie is having dreams about her ancestor, Emily, the girls decide to hold a seance only to find out unexpected and strange results. The reason why Damon really came back to Mystic Falls is revealed when Stefan and Damon spend time together. It is revealed that Katherine is not dead, and all the other vampires whom were thought to be burned in the church are still underground in Mystic Falls. Emily possesses Bonnie and destroys the crystal which could have brought back Kathrine. After destroying the crystal, the furious Damon attacks Bonnie, but Stefan saves her by making her drink his blood. Bonnie is frightened of Damon and Stefan, until Elena reveals to her what she was hiding. Matt continues to be there for Caroline when she needs it.
